Louis E. Bricklin served the firm as Managing Attorney from 1989 to 2014 and is currently Of Counsel. Born and raised in Philadelphia, he obtained his undergraduate degree with high honors in 1971 from the University of Virginia where he was elected to Phi Beta Kappa. He considered a career in communications having served both as sports director and disc jockey on the University's student run radio station before returning to Philadelphia where he obtained his Juris Doctor with distinction from the University of Pennsylvania in 1974. While at Penn he was an editor of the Law Review and elected to the Law School's Order of the Coif. Louis started his legal career by clerking for the Honorable Edward Becker, then a judge of the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania. Louis joined Bennett, Bricklin & Saltzburg LLC in 1975.

Louis focuses his practice in the area of insurance bad faith and coverage litigation. He has forty years of experience in counseling claims professionals on the appropriate handling of claims and since the enactment of Pennsylvania's bad faith statute in 1990 has defended insurers in all manner of extra-contractual claims. He has spoken frequently on bad faith and coverage issues to the Defense Research Institute, Pennsylvania Bar Institute, the Pennsylvania Defense Institute and Pennsylvania Association for Justice (formerly, the Pennsylvania Trial Lawyer Association). From 2007 to 2023 he was named a Pennsylvania Super Lawyer®.[i]  Also in 2016, the Pennsylvania Defense Institute presented Louis with its Distinguished Defense Counsel Lifetime Achievement Award given to acknowledge his “lifetime commitment to the law, his efforts to educate the bar about the judiciary and his promotion of the highest ideals of justice in the community”

He has built his practice around two fundamental concepts. First, clients are entitled to a superlative work product from the attorneys who represent them. Although the system is not perfect, the quality of an attorney's work product can make a difference in the outcome of litigation. Second, Louis recognizes that, by definition, a lawsuit is a problem which deprives a client of the opportunity to put time to more profitable use. At a minimum, therefore, the client should know at every step of the proceeding what is being done to solve the problem, when a resolution may occur and a best estimation as to the likely outcome.

Louis has served both as solicitor and President of Beth David Reform Congregation in Gladwyne, Pennsylvania and currently serves on the Congregation’s Board of Trustees. Vacation time often finds him biking through some distant part of the world. To date, he has completed about a dozen such trips on every continent except South America (and Antarctica, where the biking can get a little rough). Golf and trying to play the piano -- when no one is around to hear it -- consume most of the rest of his time.
