Louis E. Bricklin is managing partner of Bennett, Bricklin & Saltzburg LLP and chair of its insurance coverage/bad faith team. Born and raised in Philadelphia, he obtained his undergraduate degree with high honors in 1971 from the University of Virginia where he was elected to Phi Beta Kappa. He considered a career in communications having served both as sports director and disc jockey on the University's student run radio station before returning to Philadelphia where he obtained his Juris Doctorate with distinction from the University of Pennsylvania in 1974. While at Penn he was an editor of the Law Review and elected to the Law School's Order of the Coif.

Louis started his legal career by clerking for the Honorable Edward Becker, then a judge of the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania. Following his clerkship, Louis joined Bennett, Bricklin & Saltzburg LLP as an associate. He was elected a partner in the firm in 1980 and became the firm's managing partner in 1989.

Louis focuses his practice in the area of insurance bad faith litigation. He relies on his more than thirty years of experience in working with insurance claims-handling professionals to chair the firm's highly successful bad faith/insurance coverage team. Representing clients in bad faith and extra-contractual actions brought in federal and state courts, he has produced highly favorable results for his clients (including outright withdrawal of several such claims) through a combination of close knowledge of the claims-handling process and the latest procedural and substantive developments in the bad faith field. Louis spends a significant amount of his time counseling firm clients on measures they can introduce to lessen their exposure to such claims.

Louis has lectured Pennsylvania state trial court judges concerning the law of bad faith. In addition, he has frequently spoken at seminars presented by the Pennsylvania Bar Institute, the Pennsylvania Defense Institute and PA Association for Justice (formerly, the Pennsylvania Trial Lawyer Association).

He has built his practice around two fundamental concepts. First, clients are entitled to a superlative work product from the attorneys who represent them. Although the system is not perfect, the quality of an attorney's work product can make a difference in the outcome of litigation. Second, Louis recognizes that, by definition, a lawsuit is a problem which deprives a client of the opportunity to put time to more profitable use. At a minimum, therefore, the client should know at every step of the proceeding what is being done to solve the problem, when a resolution may occur and a best estimation as to the likely outcome.

When he finds the time to do so, Louis relaxes by avidly following Philadelphia's sports teams, biking and, when no one is around to be bothered, playing the piano.
